FAQ

Helpful Information about School Guitar and Ukulele lessons.

WHAT TYPE OF GUITAR / UKULELE SHOULD I START WITH?

Most Primary School students (age 7-11) begin with a 3/4 size nylon strung classical guitar. Ukulele students usually begin with a soprano size Ukulele. Most Secondary School students play on a full size acoustic steel string, classical or electric guitar depending upon which music genre they are focussing on. Ukulele students at Secondary School may continue with a Soprano Ukulele or use a Concert or Tenor Ukulele. Intersound Guitars in Dursley sell a range of suitable Guitars and Ukuleles. Gloucestershire Music hire classical guitars.

WHAT MUSIC BOOKS AND OTHER ACCESSORIES DO I NEED?

Primary School Guitar Beginners need "Guitar Basics" by James Longworth and Nick Walker.

Primary School Ukulele Beginners need "Ukulele Basics" by Lorraine Bow and Alex Davis.

Students who are not beginners and Secondary School Students will be advised of the most suitable books to have.

All students should own a music stand and have a guitar tuner or guitar tuner app such as "Guitar Tuna". Electric and Acoustic Steel String Guitar Students will need their own plectrums. Classical Guitar Students will need a footstool.  Useful apps for slowing down backing tracks are "Audiostretch" and "Audacity"

HOW ARE SCHOOL GUITAR AND UKULELE LESSONS ORGANISED?

Once you have signed up and paid for lessons, students are added to the timetable. Lessons times are usually rotated each week. At Secondary School,  students in Years 12 and 13 will be offered fixed times whenever possible during their "free" periods.
